Grits in a Fan

There is now more snow on the ground and covering Todd's scooter in Chapel Hill, NC, than there was the whole time I was home in Wisconsin for Christmas. 4 to 8 inches by morning! I was so disappointed with the weather up Nort' over the holiday break... but this is better.

And it's GOOD snow. PACKABLE snow. SNOWMAN snow.

Watching Southerners get snowed in is always fabulously entertaining. Bread and shovels are in scarce supply tonight. According to CNN, a motorist in Alabama said it looks like "grits in a fan."

Snow, glorious snow! What a treat--I'm enchanted with it--and it won't be around
long enough to get dirty and dreary. Hmmm, there may be something to this NC
weather after all!

People here are HILARIOUS. Mostly the issue is that they just don't have the
system in place to deal with it--there are only 30 snowplows for all of
Charlotte. Yesterday they were predicting snow and everyone was basically
planning not to be at work today--without a flake on the ground. I thought
it was so funny and didn't take anyone seriously. Then this morning my phone
rang and it was one of my contractors asking about the snow policy; which of
course I didn't know, since I thought the whole thing was more or less a
joke. I turned on the radio to learn we had 4-6 inches--hoo ha! But that
certainly didn't seem like work-stopper to me--then I learned that
everything is closed--schools, restaurants, movie theatres. I'm not
kidding!! I came to work (FU doesn't give snow days, so if you take the day
off it's vacation time and I'm not about to give up a day of vacation for 4
inches of snow when I walk to work) and NO ONE is here. There are about 5 of
us--the STARBUCKS is closed!!

So, I'm having a great day--it's snowing, lovely, lovely and the office is
quiet as a tomb. I'm taking on the day at an extremely leisurely pace.

We got around 11 inches and some unbelievable icicles, all told. Quite a respectable snowfall. The day yesterday involved quite a bit of television, baking, some arts and crafts, a nap, and one driving adventure to drop in on a sparsely attended birthday lasagna party.

I actually DID call in to work, but the store was closing early anyway, and I'm only part-time. ;)
