Rock On, Sister

I'm about to toss aside the extended abstract I should be working on for class tomorrow in favor of a shopping spree at my local record store. I need to buy the entire Sleater-Kinney oeuvre immediately.

Is there anything better than unexpectedly hearing a chord with exactly the resonance that shakes your bones and sends a chill shooting down your back?

While I admit that Sleater-Kinney is a wonderful band, I don't know that I or any of my S-K fan friends can recommend their first album, the eponymous black one. It's just too harsh, too raw, something like that.

But I highly recommend everything from Call the Doctor through All Hands on the Bad One.

But I have to know what chord it is that struck you so. If you're listening to The Hot Rock as your page indicates, I'd guess it's in Get Up. Such a redemption-sounding song. (obPortland: the video for Get Up features Janet Weiss standing at the bus stop outside my friend Hermann's house.)

As for chilling intros, however, may I also recommend the first thirty seconds of "Good Things" (and, you know, the rest of the song, too) from S-K's Call the Doctor? That song's music ties so well with the lyrics. Wistful, wistful.

And here I am gushing over Sleater-Kinney in the comments section of someone's weblog. I'm such a dork.

So you know, that video would be viewable here.

The first song, Start Together (right-click to download). At the beginning of the second verse, where the lower register comes in and the whole world opens up.

Janet Weiss? Isn't that the name of the Susan Saradon character in the Rocky Horror Picture Show?
