Sam I Am The I Am Sam soundtrack, consisting entirely of Beatles cover songs, is underwhelming. The second half of the album is particularly disappointing and at times downright unlistenable. But the album's saving grace is track 8, a haunting "Golden Slumbers" sung by Ben Folds. Never one of my favorite Beatles songs, but, here... oh, lovely and, I think, now one of my favorite Ben Folds recordings. Gentle rumbling drums, brooding cello, clear brass, honest voice. "Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry, and I will sing a lullaby." 31 Mar 2002 at 05:24 PM
Comments Wow, you thought the Ben Folds cover was the best thing on it? Interesting. I was a bit disappointed in his interpretation. I agree that the second half is not as good as the first, but I wouldn't call the whole thing underwhelming. I loved Sarah McLachlan's Blackbird, and Ben Harper's Strawberry Fields and Sheryl Crow's Mother Nature's Son managed to be beautiful and a bit different, yet true to the original spirit of the tunes. But honestly, I think I was destined to like it and forgive its shortcoming, if for no other reason than I heard it all during the movie, where it really does help carry the film, and the simple fact that it brought together some of my all time favorite artists. That Revolution 1 cover, however, was crap. Says Jason And don't go telling me my song titles belong in quotes, not italics. I already know that. :-P Says Jason Post a comment |
